LaLiga Matchday 24 proved to be a decisive round in the title race and the battle across the table. With Barcelona dropping crucial points and Real Madrid taking full advantage, the standings have taken a significant turn. As the season moves closer to its final stretch, every result is beginning to carry extra weight.

Key Match Summaries

Elche and Osasuna ended their fixture in a goalless draw. While Elche racked up most of the ball possession and shots on target, it was Osasuna’s defense which kept them from scoring. 

Espanyol and Celta also ended their bout in a stalemate, albeit with a 2-2 score. Celta opened the scoring in the first half while the hosts equalized in the 66th minute. Espanyol took the lead in the final minutes of the game, only for the visitors to equalize in the injury time. Sevilla and Alaves also concluded their match with a 1-1 draw. An early red card wasn’t a worry for Sevilla as they scored in the first half. But, Alaves got their equalizer in the 80th minute and a 10-man Sevilla managed to keep the scores level by the end. 

Real Madrid triumphed over Real Sociedad with a 4-1 score at the Bernabéu. The first half of the match saw 4 goals, with Real scoring in just 5 minutes. While the hosts managed to score two more before the second half, Sociedad successfully converted a penalty. An early penalty in the 2nd half for Real Madrid saw them take the lead by 3 goals, and Los Blancos went on to win the game easily. Getafe won over Villarreal, in a thrilling match ending in 2-1. Getafe scored just before the end of first half and in the starting minutes of the 2nd half. Villarreal managed to score a goal in the 76th minute, but couldn’t penetrate Getafe’s defense until the final whistle. 

Rayo Vallecano upset Atletico Madrid, winning the fixture with a 3-0 at home. Vallecano put two past the defense in the first half and scored another in the 76th minute. Atletico were helpless throughout the match, losing valuable points in this stage of the league. Athletic Club won the match against hosts Real Oviedo, with a 2-1 score. While Oviedo scored in the first half, Bilbao came back in the second half – scoring a goal and successfully converting a penalty – to take the lead and the win subsequently. 

Valencia won over a 10-man Levante, with a 2-0 score away from home. After a decent first half, where neither team scored, Villarreal put two ahead in the second half. Levante on the other hand, were down to 10 men, after an argument in the dying minutes of the game. Real Betis won over Mallorca with a 2-1 score away from home. A scintillating first half saw Betis draw the first blood and double their lead by the end of 1st half. Mallorca tried to fight back in the 2nd half, but could only score one. 

The final match of the matchday saw leaders Barcelona lose to Girona with 2-1. Barcelona failed to capitalize on a penalty in the first half, but opened the scoring in the 59th minute. THe hosts equalized just after 2 minutes and scored in the end moments of the match, snatching a victory. Barcelona lost points and shifted to 2nd place, following the defeat. 

Standout Players of the Week

Elche’s midfield, mainly Aleix Febas and Germán Valera played an important role, while Osasuna’s keeper Sergio Herrera shined in defense. Kike García stood out for Espanyol while Ferran Jutglá impressed for Celta. Getafe’s Luis Milla had a notable game, pulling the strings in the midfield. Tony Martínez turned out to be a clutch player for Alaves, scoring the equalizer with just 10 minutes to spare. 

Vinicius Jr. with 2 goals and Federico Valverde with a goal were instrumental in their victory against Sociedad. Mikel Jauregizar was impressive for Bilbao, scoring the equalizer against Oviedo. Vallecano’s defense – especially Nobel Mendy and Andrei Rațiu – proved impenetrable for Atletico, with Mendy scoring a goal and Rațiu bagging an assist. 

Despite their loss, Barcelona’s keeper Joan García and Pau Cubarsí stood out in their match against Girona, with the latter scoring their only goal. Valencia’s keeper Stole Dimitrievski stood out for his performance between the sticks, while Largie Ramazani added a goal to the scoresheet. For Betis, Abdessamad Ezzalouli was the star man, netting in the opener in the 18th minute. 

Suspension Updates

There were a total of 5 red cards – 3 on the pitch and 2 off of it – this matchday. Kervin Arriaga of Levante was shown a second yellow for an argument in their match against Valencia. Additionally, Girona’s Joel Roca was shown a straight red for a foul in injury time against Barcelona. Juanlu Sánchez was shown a second yellow in just the 16th minute for a foul. Additionally, his teammates on the bench Joan Jordán and Matías Almeyda were also given the red card for argument. These 5 players are set to miss their fixtures in LaLiga’s next round. 

League Table and Standings

Real Madrid takes the top spot with 60 points, as Barcelona drop to the 2nd place with 58 points. Villarreal and Atletico Madrid remain in 3rd and 4th, both tied on 45 points each. Real Betis moves into 5th with 41 points, while Espanyol and Celta take the 6th and 7th spots. Real Sociedad drops down to 8th, tied on points with Athletic Club in the 9th place. Osasuna stays in 10th place, rounding off the first half of the table.

Getafe and Girona stand in 11th and 12th respectively, with both teams on 29 points. Sevilla, Alaves and Valencia follow, all tied on 26 points. Elche moved to 16th, while Rayo Vallecano took 17th place following their victory. Mallorca, Levante and Real Oviedo take the relegation spots, but hope to get not too familiar with the places in the upcoming rounds.

Matchday 25 of LaLiga brings us another exciting round of action in Spain as Atletico Madrid take on Espanyol. Barcelona host Levante while Real Madrid travel to Osasuna. Villarreal welcomes Valencia while Real Betis take on Rayo Vallecano.
