Premier League Matchday 16 Review

Only three points separate the top three teams atop the Premier League standings as the battle for the top prize intensifies with each passing week. Matchday 16 once again showed the unpredictable nature of the best league in the world. While big guns like Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all picked up crucial wins this past weekend, Spurs were on the receiving end of a shocking 0-3 upset. Without further ado, let’s take a quick recap of all the action.
Key Match Summaries
Manchester United were held to a 4-4 draw by Bournemouth as the two sides cooked up the most entertaining fixture in recent memory. Amad Diallo put the Red Devils ahead before Bournemouth fought back through Antoine Semenyo. United took the lead again through Casemiro, but the Cherries simply didn’t bog down. Evanilson and Marcus Tavernier even gave the visitors a short-lived lead before Bruno Fernandes levelled the scoring. Matheus Cunha scored to give the Old Trafford a glimmer of hope before Eli Junior Kroupi stole a point for his side.

Chelsea were the first team in action this week as they hosted Everton at the Stamford Bridge. Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto’s first-half goals were enough to help the Blues secure an easy win at home. The Toffees could only muster one shot on target, as Enzo Maresca’s side remains in pursuit of the UEFA Champions League group stage berth.
Liverpool welcomed Brighton to Anfield, hoping to stay within touching distance of the top six. Mohamed Salah got a chance to feature off the bench after his alleged tussle with coach Arne Slot. He delivered an assist to Hugo Ekitike, who scored either side of the half-time whistle to give the Reds only their second win in five matches. Brighton will rue their missed chances as they failed to test Alisson in goal.

League leaders Arsenal maintained their two-point lead over Manchester City with a 2-1 win over bottom-placed Wolves. The Gunners needed two own goals to secure three crucial points. After a goalless first half, Sam Johnstone scored an own goal to break the deadlock. Tolu Arokodare seemingly snatched a point for Wolves by scoring right at the death, but it was all undone by Yerson Mosquera’s unfortunate own goal.
Pep Guardiola masterminded a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Erling Haaland simply cannot stop scoring as the Norwegian struck a brace to take his tally to 17 goals for the season. Phil Foden also registered his name on the scoresheet as the defending champions stamped their authority over the Eagles.

Nottingham Forest produced the most shocking result this week as they stunned Tottenham Hotspur 3-0. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored either side of the break before Ibrahim Sangare piled on more misery on Spurs.
In other results, Sunderland stunned Newcastle to pick up a famous 1-0 win. Fulham defeated Burnley 3-2 in a five-goal epic. Aston Villa also prevailed in a five-goal classic, ousting West Ham 3-2. Brentford and Leeds shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw.
Standout Players and Performances
