2026. okt. 14.PSV 1-1 Shakhtar: Dest equalizes as stats split it
PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk shared the points in a 1-1 UEFA Champions League duel at Philips Stadion, a match where the numbers mirrored the scoreline. Shakhtar struck just before the break through Gleiker Mendoza, only for Sergiño Dest to level three minutes into the second half. It finished with both teams producing exactly 0.50 xG, and two shots on target apiece. PSV had more of the ball overall and surged after halftime, while Shakhtar were tidier inside the box. The game also had a healthy list of bookings, reflecting an intense European night. Full match data is available on the Sofascore match page.
How the draw unfolded
Shakhtar got their breakthrough right on the stroke of halftime. Oleg Ocheretko played forward to Isaque, who slipped a neat assist into the right channel for Mendoza at 45′. The finish carried a modest 0.03 xG but a strong 0.38 xGoT, a sign of precise placement to the low-right corner past Matěj Kovář. It sent the visitors into the interval 1-0 up after a first half in which they also led possession 56-44. PSV had created little from open play before the break and were limited to four first-half shots, matching Shakhtar’s tally.
Peter Bosz’s side answered immediately after the restart. A throw-in on the left sparked a clean sequence through Ruben van Bommel and Armando Obispo, whose pass found Dest bursting inside to hit a right-footed strike at 48′. The equalizer carried 0.17 xG and 0.64 xGoT and came from a throw-in set piece that caught Shakhtar on the hop. After that, PSV controlled the tempo and looked the likelier side without overloading the goalmouth. Each goalkeeper made just one save across the 90 minutes, which speaks to how well both blocks managed the danger. The final whistle confirmed the split, with each side taking a point from Round 1.
The numbers behind the draw
Possession trended PSV’s way at 54-46, but the halves told different stories. Shakhtar edged the first 56-44, then PSV flipped it decisively to 66-34 in the second. Total shots read 10-8 to PSV, yet shots on target were level at 2-2 and so were expected goals at 0.50-0.50. PSV preferred efforts from range, taking seven shots from outside the box to Shakhtar’s two. Shakhtar were more present in prime areas with six shots inside the box versus PSV’s three.
Distribution also framed the contest. PSV completed more passes, 382 of 439, against Shakhtar’s 314 of 388. They were especially sharp with long balls, completing 36 of 50 at 72 percent, while Shakhtar went 21 of 61 at 34 percent. Final-third entries were close, 42 for PSV and 47 for Shakhtar, and touches in the opposition box were dead even at 12-12. Crosses hardly shifted the needle for either side, with PSV at 2 of 15 and Shakhtar at 1 of 7. Offsides were minimal too, with PSV caught once and Shakhtar never flagged.
Duels and defensive trends
The physical battles followed a similar equilibrium with small edges. Overall duels leaned PSV’s way at 53-47. Ground duels were a perfect split at 37 of 75 for PSV and 38 of 75 for Shakhtar, effectively 50-50 by percentage. PSV dominated the air, winning 13 of 19 aerial duels to Shakhtar’s 6 of 19. Dribbling success tilted the other direction, with Shakhtar completing five of 11 take-ons against PSV’s one of nine.
Defensively, PSV posted 22 tackles and won 59 percent of them, while Shakhtar recorded 20 tackles at a 50 percent win rate. Interceptions read 9-6 to the hosts, recoveries 46-44, and clearances 18-10. Dmytro Riznyk had three high claims that helped Shakhtar breathe during PSV’s second-half pressure. Both goalkeepers ended in the red on goals prevented, Kovář at -0.34 and Riznyk at -0.33, which fits a match where placement beat hands on the night. The foul count climbed late, finishing 15 for Shakhtar and 14 for PSV, with the visitors’ six yellows a product of frequent defensive work under pressure.
MVP spotlight: Sergiño Dest
Sergiño Dest earned a 7.8 Sofascore Rating and the MVP tag by shaping PSV’s response at both ends. He delivered the equalizer with a clean right-foot strike, then kept the right flank moving with 77 touches and 39 accurate passes from 43 attempts. He added three tackles, three fouls drawn and a key pass as PSV established second-half control. His 18 carries produced 62.5 meters of progressive distance, and he split his 14 duels evenly at seven won and seven lost. It was a complete full-back display that combined timing, clean technique and persistence.
Around him, several teammates and opponents left strong marks. Ruben van Bommel posted a 7.3 with two key passes and a game-high progressive carrying profile. Captain Ivan Perišić checked in at 7.2 after a tidy two-way shift that included four crosses and three tackles. Armando Obispo was steady on the ball at 72 of 78 passes and supplied the assist for Dest, good for a 7.0. For Shakhtar, Isaque matched the 7.3 bracket with an assist, two key passes and seven tackles, while goalscorer Mendoza closed on 7.2. The ratings underline a night with standout moments on both sides of the ball.
