The world`s biggest festival of winter sports kicks off today in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The 2018 Winter Olympics are set for February 9-25 and will be
the second Olympic Games held in South Korea

Overall, the athletes at PyeongChang will compete in 7 sports in 102 events – biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing – with 15 varied disciplines across all sports. The total number of gold medal events will be 102 – the most ever at Olympic Winter Games.

As before, SofaScore will cover every ice hockey (men`s and women`s) event. The men’s ice hockey final, as one of the traditional highlights of the Olympic Winter Games, will take place on the last day of competition.

The 2018 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament will be played according to the same format used in Sochi 2014 and Vancouver 2010 with three groups of four teams each. The best four teams from an overall 12-team ranking – the group winners and the second-ranked team with the best record – will advance to the quarter-finals while the other teams will play a qualification playoff game.

Olympic Winter Games, Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament (9-25 February 2018)
Group A: Canada, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Korea
Group B: OAR*, USA, Slovakia, Slovenia
Group C: Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany

*OAR stands for “Olympic Athlete from Russia”. The International Olympic Committee has suspended the Russian Olympic Committee over Russia’s support of performance-enhancing drugs for their athletes. However, Russian athletes can compete in the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, but the athletes will have to pass strict scrutiny, and instead of wearing their nation’s uniform, they will compete under the title OAR.
