The 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico: How This Host Country Is Going All Out

From massive infrastructure projects and stadium upgrades to increased national security, Mexico has gone all out to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Fans can expect lively street fairs, world-class cuisine, and unforgettable cultural experiences. With the country’s unmatched viewership and an undeniably passionate fanbase, the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico will be a nonstop party. Here’s everything this host country has done to get ready.

Expanded Airport Capacity and Airport Transportation

Are you flying into Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup? To handle the expected surge of international fans, the Mexican government has expanded capacity at Mexico City International Airport and Guadalajara International Airport. They’ve also modernized airport terminals with new flooring, seating, and restrooms.

To make getting to and from airports easier, Mexico has enhanced transit connectivity by widening the Chapala Highway near Guadalajara (GDL) and all abutting roads. Those flying into GDL and relying on public transit can catch the region’s all-new electric BRT line (Line 5) to popular downtown areas or for stadium access.

If you’re flying into Monterrey (MTY) instead, you can take advantage of the airport’s new “FIFA Corridor”. This highway expansion will quickly shuttle fans to top destinations nearby. MTY has also constructed an additional runway to accommodate more flights.

Stadium Updates

Mexico has spent over $150 million USD on stadium updates for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Although much of this spending was focused on upgrading nearby infrastructure rather than improving venues, Mexico’s three host stadiums still received several impressive updates.

Estadio Azteca in Mexico City

In addition to hybridizing its pitch and improving sightlines, Estadio Azteca replaced its old bench-style seating with high-quality ergonomic seats. It also expanded its capacity to accommodate up to 90,000 fans. Estadio Azteca completely overhauled its LED lighting systems, added large screens for in-stadium viewing, and installed stadium-wide Wi-Fi to reliably serve all fans at once.

The stadium also gained several important safety upgrades, including a new glass ring and metal roof. Congested concourses were torn out to support FIFA’s evacuation standards. A new sound system, new locker rooms, and remodeled restrooms complete the stadium’s updates.

On June 11, Estadio Azteca will host the opening match for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This Group A match will see Mexico and South Africa face off on the field. This will be the third time Estadio Azteca has hosted an opening match for the tournament, and it’s currently the only stadium in the world to hold this distinction.

Estadio BBVA (Monterrey)

In preparation for the World Cup, Estadio BBVA in Monterrey has totally revamped its pitch. The stadium installed SIS hybrid grass turf, root-zone aeration, and a smart irrigation system. To prevent puddling during rain, it also installed underground vacuums.

To raise its field brightness to FIFA Lighting Standard A, Estadio BBVA installed a custom Total Light Control (TLC) LED lighting system. Minor renovations were also made to various off-field areas for enhanced security and Internet connectivity.

The stadium will host three group-stage matches and one knockout-round fixture. Tunisia and Sweden will play the stadium’s first 2026 FIFA World Cup match on June 14.

Estadio Akron in Guadalajara

Like Estadio BBVA, Estadio Akron completely revitalized its pitch and installed a FIFA-compliant LED lighting system. Estadio Akron also installed several enlarged, high-definition screens, a new sound system, and full-speed Wi-Fi. This last upgrade made Estadio Akron the very first stadium in Mexico to offer full-speed, stadium-wide Wi-Fi, including in parking areas.

Estadio Akron will host four group-stage FIFA World Cup matches in 2026. South Korea and the UEFA Playoff Winner will kick off on June 11.

Official FIFA Fan Festivals

In 2026, official FIFA Fan Festivals give fans access to non-stop parties throughout the tournament, with free entry, local cuisine, live entertainment, and more. Mexico has multiple ways for fans to party before, during, and after the main events. As of late April, Mexico City alone has planned 18 different FIFA fan festivals across 16 of its boroughs.

Mexico City (El Zocalo)

El Zocalo is the main public square in Mexico City. It’s also the premier destination for FIFA parties. Located directly over the ceremonial center of Tenochtitlan, the ancient Aztec Capital, it will feature a nearly 5,500-square-foot viewing screen. This is the largest viewing screen of any FIFA fan festival in the world.

Mexico City Boroughs

In addition to its main fan festival hosted at El Zocalo, Mexico City will also host festivals in Central de Abasto, Utopia Deportivo, Plaza Garibaldi, Unidad Independencia, and more. While each event is free, fans should register in advance to obtain QR codes for entry.

Expanded Travel Options

Getting into Mexico on a budget is easy. In addition to driving or flying, fans can use Tornado Bus Company, FlixBus, or Omnibus de Mexico. If departing from border cities like El Paso, San Diego, or Laredo, they can also simply walk or bike across the border. There are even several cruise ships and passenger ferries that offer convenient and affordable service.

From implementing high-tech security and surveillance to ramping up onsite personnel, Mexico is well-prepared for FIFA-related border crossings. The country is using a tri-lateral processing system (in conjunction with the USA and Canada) that includes the deployment of 100,000 security personnel, 24 aircraft, and 2,500 vehicles to ensure the safety, efficiency, and convenience of entering and exiting Mexico.
