LaLiga Matchday 20 delivered a weekend of decisive results, late drama, and key movements across the league table. The matchday witnessed the leaders fumble along with several mid-table clashes and relegation battles producing defining moments. From narrow wins to huge goal deficits, the matchday had a direct impact on both ends of the standings.

Key Match Summaries

Real Madrid registered a comfortable victory over Levante with a 2-0 score. Real kept 70% of possession, and two quick goals in the 2nd half were enough to secure their victory. Girona won over hosts Espanyol; also with a 2-0 score. The visitors were awarded a penalty in the injury time of both the halves – which they comfortably converted. Real Betis earned a comfortable 2-0 victory over Villarreal. While the first half of the match was relatively forgetful, the second half saw the hosts score two goals while the visitors picked up a red card. Valencia took home the win against hosts Getafe with a 1-0 score. The match was fairly contested, but Valencia scored the only goal in the 84th minute to take the win. 

Mallorca came out victorious with 3-2 in their bout against Athletic Club. Both the teams fought out in the scoring first half, scoring 2 goals each. But the second half spelled heartbreak for the Bilbao outfit, as one of their players was sent off. Mallorca capitalised on it and converted the penalty which proved to be the winner. Celta Vigo recorded an easy 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. A goal in the first half and 2 in the 2nd half were more than enough for Celta to see it to the victory, while Rayo registered a red card in the second half. 

Osasuna took home the victory against Real Oviedo with 3-2 in a closely-contested match. The visitors entered the second half leading by a goal, but the scores came all level by the 75th minute where both the teams scored 2 a piece. Osasuna found the winning goal in injury time, which proved costly for the visitors. Atletico Madrid claimed the victory against Alaves with a 1-0 scoreline at home. After a plain first half, Atletico scored early in the 2nd half and maintained the lead to take home the three points. 

League leaders Barcelona lost their away game to Real Sociedad with a 2-1 score. While Sociedad had a goal in the first half which Barcelona equalized in the 70th minute, the former immediately pulled one back and kept the lead until the end. The final match of this matchday saw Elche draw the match with Sevilla with 2 goals from each team. Elche looked like they’d run away with the win, if not for an injury time penalty awarded to Sevilla. 

Standout Players

Leo Román of Mallorca received a perfect 10 Sofascore rating for his 9 spectacular saves against Athletic Club. Vedat Muriqi was awarded a 8.8 Sofascore rating, for his stellar hattrick. While Girona’s Vladyslav Vanat scored both the penalties, it was Daley Blind who was the star of the match for his efficiency at the back line. Raúl Asencio was the player of the match for Real Madrid, for his defensive skills and a goal against Levante.  

Osasuna’s Ante Budimir bagged a brace while Victor Muñoz grabbed the winning goal. In response, Federico Viñas and Alberto Reina of Oviedo scored a goal each but couldn’t overturn the defeat. Pablo Fornals and Aitor Ruibal scored one goal each in Real Betis’ victory over Villarreal. José Luis Gayà scored the only goal for Valencia against Getafe. Pablo Barrios was the star player for Atletico, with an important assist to Alexander Sørloth – for the only goal of the match. 

Bryan Zaragoza was the key player for Celta, along with Marcos Alonso and Carl Starfelt standing out in defense. Despite their loss, Barca’s Lamine Yamal bagged the player of the match with a 9.2 Sofascore rating. Aleix Febas and Germán Valera netted a goal each for Elche while Sevilla’s Akor Adams scored the brace to draw the match. 

Suspension Updates

Bilbao’s Gorka Guruzeta was sent off in the second half for argument while Íñigo Lekue on the bench was handed a straight red for the same reason. Osasuna’s Alejandro Catena was shown the straight red for a foul in injury time. Santi Comesaña of Villarreal was also shown a straight red for foul against Betis. Valencia’s Cristian Rivero was also shown a red on bench for argument. Nobel Mendy of Rayo Vallecano was given a straight red for a foul against Celta. Carlos Soler of Sociedad also received a straight red at the end of the 2nd half against Barcelona. All these players are set to miss their next round of LaLiga fixtures.

League Table and Impact

Barcelona continue at the top despite their loss, and just a point away are Real Madrid in second place. Villarreal and Atletico – tied on 41 points – take the 3rd and 4th places, with Espanyol, Real Betis and Celta trailing behind. 3 clubs – Elche, Real Sociedad and Athletic Club – tied on 32 points complete the first half of the table.

Girona moved up to 11th place, following their 3rd consecutive victory. Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano – both on 22 points – take up the 12th and 13th spots. Sevilla, Mallorca and Getafe take the next spots – all on the same points (21). Valencia moves up to 17th following their much awaited win. Alaves, Levante and Oviedo round off the league table for this week.
