NBA Western Conference Week 1 Review

One week of NBA 2025-26 action done and dusted, and things are already getting heated in the West. The opening game between Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets was a double-overtime thriller. The defending champions prevailed 125–124 as reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 35 points. Victor Wembanyama channeled his inner god-mode as he picked up 33.3 points per game, 13.3 rebounds per game and helped Spurs go 3-0 so far.

Key Match Summaries

Firm contenders to win the NBA crown once again, Oklahoma Thunder have won all four of their matches so far this season, alongside San Antonio Spurs.

Starting with the Player of the Week from West, Wembanyama has totalled 100 points and 18 blocks. He is the first player in NBA history to clock those numbers at the start of the season. Spurs downed Dallas Mavericks, and New Orleans Pelicans before easing past Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors.

The defending champs meanwhile outlasted Rockets in the season opener, before taking down Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks and the Mavericks. Golden State Warriors took down the star-studded Los Angeles Lakers and they then defeated the Denver Nuggets as well. Portland Trail Blazers shocked Stephen Curry and Co. before they bounced back to winning ways against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Utah Jazz suffered an upset at the hands of Sacramento Kings in their season opener before they overcame the Phoenix Suns in over-time. Los Angeles Clippers stand at 2-1, powered by James Harden’s 21.7 points. After losing to Utah Jazz, Tyronn Lue masterminded wins over Phoenix Suns and the Trail Blazers.

Denver Nuggets are also at 2-1 as Nikola Jokić continues to shine. Golden State trumped the Nuggets but they showed resilience to overpower the Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves

Tiago Splitter has Portland sitting in seventh place with two wins and as many losses. Starting the season with a defeat to the Timberwolves didn’t stop them from taking down Golden State. LA Clippers defeated Portland before they responded with a stunning win over LA Lakers.

With LeBron James sidelined through injury, Luka Dončić recorded the most points per match (46). LA Lakers went down to Golden State in their first match before Dončić guided them past the Timberwolves. A win over the Kings and a loss to Portland has them languishing in the last playoffs berth.

Chris Finch has overseen two wins and two losses as Minnesota prevailed over Portland and the Pacers. They struggled against LA Lakers and Nuggets despite Anthony Edwards’ brilliance as he racked up 25.7 PPM.

Banking on the injury-prone Ja Morant, the Grizzlies stand at 2-2. Tuomas Iisalo has overseen wins over mid-table opponents New Orleans Pelicans and the Pacers. But they’ve struggled against stronger teams like Golden State and Miami Heat.

Sacramento Kings have just one win over the Jazz, sandwiched between two defeats to the Suns and the Lakers. They are next up against the Thunder and the Bulls, two of the most difficult fixtures.

The buzz around Kevin Durant’s arrival at Houston is fizzing out as they lost to Thunder in over-time and against Detroit Pistons. A win over bottom-placed Brooklyn Nets would have boosted their morale.

The Mavericks are clearly struggling in life after Luka Dončić, as they are second bottom, just below the Suns and a place above the Pelicans.

Standout Players and Performances

Luka Dončić (9.7) is the highest rated player in SofaScore’s average ratings for week 1. Victor Wembanyama (8.93) is close behind, followed by Austin Reaves (8.8) and Nikola Jokić (8.53). Alongside, Giannis Antetokoumpo, the aforementioned five players make up the SofaScore Team of the week.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (8.5), Lauri Markanen (8.3) and Anthony Edwards (8.25) are also among the best of the lot.

League Table & Impact

The Suns are sitting pretty atop the league table, just ahead of the Thunder on points difference. Golden State are in third, followed by Jazz, LA Clippers and the Nuggets. Portland and LA Lakers round off the top eight as Timberwolves and Grizzlies complete the top ten. The Rockets find themselves in 12th, just below the Kings. The Suns, Mavericks and the Pelicans have plenty of work to do.

They have a few more out injured, while Cameron Johnson is the only injury absentee for Nuggets. Thunder will be waiting for an update on Jalen Williams, Isaiah Joe and Alex Caruso.

Looking Ahead

The marquee fixture of Week 2 will see Steph Curry’s Golden State take on Milwaukee Bucks. The Thunder will face the Kings, and the Rockets will be up against Toronto Raptors. Mavericks will hope to pick up a much-needed win against the Pacers. Nuggets are due to host the Pelicans. Jazz and Trail Blazers will clash in an interesting battle. Lakers will face the Timberwolves while the Suns will challenge the Grizzlies.
